The European dominated culture actively and many passively believe the current Supreme Court nominee supports reverse discrimination. This is what the conservatives are saying, (conservative often is a euphemism for racist). Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit President Obama has promised to nominate liberal judicial activists who will indulge their left-wing policy preferences based on "empathy" instead of neutrally in applying the law. In selecting Sonia Sotomayor as…

Did BET really steal his ideas? Were interns being overworked, and not trained on purpose? Were people being passed up for favorites that the producers wanted to sleep with? Was Big Lez booted for being too dark and performing African dance?

Black Culture is always at the forefront of most trends in the world. Non blacks are the leading consumers of inner city fashions, slang, music including the music forms pioneered by blacks: Jazz, Blues, Rock and Hip Hop
The list can go on and on. We are the most resourceful people in the world.
I thought I had seen it all until yesterday surfing You Tube looking for black hair styles.
I ran across the Black Beauty Hair Battle. I was expecting to see a traditional Barber Battle like the ones in…

JUST THOUGHT
By Maurice Youmans
Some people think that they are supposed to simply get in where you fit in, be a good boy or girl and simply follow suit,
Be the person mama-n-them’ say you are, because of the things you did when you were young, they called them cute……
No one knew when you were young, you were mimicking the characters you saw on TV.. you dreamed and said…. that character is me! It was funny to your parents but the TV was telling you who you are and what you will become to be, y…

I painstakingly have sat through some very...what's the right word?....interesting African American directed independent films. Where do I begin? I try to support my brothers and sisters but I think support can be a two way street, particularly when the other party starts becoming slack in the quality. I have sat through...here we go again...interesting Master P films where there's a lot going on in the movie. When a movie is soo horrid, who's to blame? Is it the director? The producer? The acto…

Is it possible? You come across artists in all genres who say they are independent, but then you find out it's much more complicated that that. So how do you determine who is independent? He owns own masters but the studio decides what is on his album? She is allowed to have full creative control of her projects but she has to pay for distribution? He has written for major singers but she does backup singing to make ends meet?

African actors suffered a gruesome fate during the Holocaust which many people are not aware of. Rest in peace Entertainers Mandlakazi and Khwili, Hilarius (Lari) Gilges, Valaida Snow, and Mahjub bin Adam Mohamed. I checked the library and found out Mohamed's films are available somewhere, but not in this library.

Africans come in many skin colors, but unfortunately stereotypes still exist. There is a common misconception that all Africans look like Alek Wek (who is beautiful by the way). Ironically, many of the people who perpetuate these stereotypes have never been to Africa, but one of my biggest pet peeves is someone who thinks that Africans have to have a European parent to be attractive.
I had the unpleasant experience of talking to an African American magazine editor who only hired African women f…

Now many of these actresses sank into obscurity, but there are few pieces of literature out there dedicated to them. I came across this blog in tribute to classic African American actresses. One of my favorite things to do is the "interlibrary loan" using WORLD CAT at the local library and checking out some films, books, and articles that aren't available in my vicinity. This comes in handy when I want to see films of African descent that aren't immediately available.
